Dom Casmurro, by Machado de Assis.

I don't know how this novel was titled in English-speaking countries; I guess they kept the original title; a translation for it which I saw at Wikipedia is Sir Dour.
This is the third novel I have read by this author, the others being Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas and Quincas Borba. It is a strong novel about infidelity and deceit; it also has very interesting things to say about the Catholic religion as it was practiced in the 19th century. Machado was a great psychologist, and also probes deeper philosophical themes such as Truth, Illusion and Happiness.
